Sport used as a tool to support social integration

Gothenburg is one of the most segregated cities in Sweden! Initiatives are running but more can be done. We can all contribute! This project will use sport as a tool in order to support integration.

This project is inspired by an initiative in Borlänge, Sweden, with Somalis playing bandy, www.somaliabandy.com. The aha-experience for the creator of this project was the fact that eight of the Somalis today are studying at collage. Sport is used to support social integration! Sports have always been a way to an active life and breaking social barriers.

Target area is the north eastern parts of Gothenburg and initially men at the age of 16 to 25 years. First priority is to have a team ready in October participating in the Gothenburg Floorball league.

This project is not only focusing on sport. Sport will be used as a tool in order to support integration. By visiting companies, meeting employees, find trainee jobs and role models the target is to sow seeds for future plans and support the team members to develop their full potential!

Social problems

Gothenburg is one of the most segregated cities in Sweden! More has to be done to increase social integration. Sport will be used as one way for individuals to meet other, belong to a team and share best practice.

Our solution

Start a team with individuals from the north eastern parts of Gothenburg. Prepare for the Floorball league in October by practising on a regular basis. More information regarding Floorball can be found at www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floorball.

Based on the individual needs activities will be organized like visits at companies and schools, meet employees who can share their stories and find job opportunities. Other ways forward creating inspiration will be by finding role models in order to sow seeds for future plans.

Floorball in the area?

In Hammarkullen, Hjällbo and Bergsjön there are no Floorball Clubs established. This project gives pre requisites starting a new club in the area.

Project model

The idea creator Pontus Berger has taken leave of absence during one and a half year from his employment to drive this project. Short term target is to have a team ready in October. In parallel work with the team with their individual needs. The short term activities might be the foundation for a club also with female and youth players. The club will at the end of the project bare its own costs.
