Futebol dá forca - Football gives strength

By Cecilia Andrén Nyström With football as communicative tool, Mozambican girls learn to stand up for their rights. Over 3000 girls are active but lack material!

The project Futebol dá força was started by the 20-year old Swedish Cecilia Andrén Nystrom in the beginning of 2012. As a former football player, referee and coach for girls in Sweden she knew that football is not just a sport but can have a huge social impact if it's used in the right way. However, she didn't understand how huge.. Now the project is growing into a nationwide movement with soon over 3000 active girls!

We use football as a communicative tool to change attitudes and pre-conceived ideas in local communities all over Mozambique. Our coaches are young voluntary women and men educated as football coaches, but also in human rights and sexual & reproductive health. With this knowledge our goal is to prevent early pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and sexual & domestic violence. The self-confidence that the girls get on the field will help them in their daily struggle to live the lives they want to live and to have the courage to follow their dreams!

The project has grown from one team to 26 teams with over 540 girls integrated in the project. It is now a collaboration between the Mozambican organization Lurdes Mutola Foundation, the international Football for Worldwide Unity, the Mozambican Football Federation and the Mozambican Ministries of Education and Youth & Sports. We are now educating 120 more coaches in all provinces in the country through the Dutch Football Federation and will then have 148 coaches in total with over 3000 girls active training football and life skills.

But for this they need material. Upon completing the coaching and life skills education our coaches receive a start-kit with material: 4 balls, 20 cones, 10 bibs, 1 whistle, 1 stopwatch and 1 ball pump. With this they then continue with their fight for girls' rights both on and outside the field. But for this, we need your help! Help us raise the money for our newly educated coaches and help our movement grow. Choose to make a difference. We know at least 3000 girls that will be forever grateful if you do. Thank you!

Cecilia Andrén Nyström

My name is Cecilia Andrén Nyström and I'm 21 years old. I don't have a University degree (yet), I don't have a job and no capital - but even though I don't have the best prerequisites I've managed to create a job that I like and that makes me happy. And it makes around 3000 other young women happy as well. I've started the project Futebol dá força. It is a project in Mozambique, the world's fourth most poor country, where I by using football as a tool increase girls' self confidence and educate them about their rights, sexual & reproductive health, family planning and how to prevent HIV/AIDS and sexual & domestic violence. In less than a year the project has grown from idea to practice and now has 148 young voluntary coaches who train over 3000 girls in football and life skills all over Mozambique.
